Finally Finished–Gull Lace Cuff Pink Socks

This was such a slow going project but I am finally finished. Voila! I give you Strawberry Lime socks.

The cuff is in Gull Lace and that lace stretches so the socks are a little loose around the cuff. I increased the number of stitches around the widest part of my feet and I have a nice custom fit. the socks look a little wonky because my feet are. I guess I can’t help that.

What’s next? I have three patterns in mind. I am leaning toward a Fair Isle flower motif on the cuff. Stay tuned.

I Don’t Like Lace!

I don’t like lace on my socks. I finally discovered what I don’t like! I have a problem with the raised fabric that is produced when I knit lace. I actually think that the fabric that is knit using a plain stockinette stitch is flatter, smoother and silkier looking. Duh! This is probably something most experienced knitters know but for me this was a great revelation. So I ended the Gull lace portion of the February Lady socks I have been knitting, at the cuff. Once I knit the heel and turned it, I continued in plain stockinette and I think it looks ok.

Now I need to look for patterns that will lay flatter and have stripes and color work. I like embroidery but would like to expand my options –Slip Stitch? Fair Isle? Entrelac?

I bought a book called “Knit Socks! 17 classic Patterns for Cozy Feet” by Betsy Lee McCarthy. The pattern on page 54 named “Winter Garden” looks inspiring. I wonder if I can pull it off in two shades of pink and one ball of white. Hmmm….

February Lady Socks — Yes!!!

I got brave and cast on two socks on two circulars. This time I was determined to not let anything go wrong. I found a wonderful pattern for “February Lady” socks on Ravelry. Here is the pattern

Of course, I messed it up. I started by not reading the pattern and have four rows of only a half of the lace pattern. So I decided to start the complete lace pattern after four rows in and call it a “design” element!

But it has been fairly easy. I am using two size one circulars and Plymouth Happy Feet Strawberry Lime yarn. The yarn is forgiving because of the spots of color in the yarn so little errors are easily hidden. I really like that.

I am not having much luck with my Plymouth Happy feet yarn in Strawbery Lime and this pattern. http://tariblog.blogspot.com/2006/06/daisies-sock-p attern.html

This time I put the pattern in MS Excel and got it to work for me. Maybe with colors that are closer in hue and shade, this pattern will pop but with the random lime color bits in the yarn, my socks did not look as wonderful as I hoped. I love love love the pattern but not with this yarn colorway. So its back to plain socks for me with this yarn. Its time to try a plain sock on two circulars with two socks (cuff down) at the same time.

I am casting on the second yoga sock so I will still be on target with having a pair completed–I will have 3 pairs done out of the 12 pairs I am trying to accomplish. Then I can have fun with Kool Aid colors and overdye my yoga socks.

Okay, so I was browsing in the yarn aisle at Michaels and found this lovely yarn by Loops and Threads called Sophie. I think Loops and Threads are Michaels store brands. Sophie is 50% Superwash Merino and 50% nylon. It was on sale for $2.99 and I couldn’t resist. It’s soft….I picked up some Pink Lemonade and some Fruit Punch Kool Aid packets for 25 cents each. I boiled the yarn in Kool Aid in the microwave for 10 minutes and got a lovely variegated yarn. I found the pattern on http://www.Ravelry.com

I may need to dye the socks again once they are finished because the sock is beginning to look like it has some pooling of color.

Disaster Strikes–Strawberry lime socks frogged! Help!

Okay! So I am trying to make this pattern http://tariblog.blogspot.com/2006/06/daisies-sock-pattern.html I cast on and worked on two socks cuff down on two circulars. Once I got past the cuff and started the pattern, I got into trouble. There are not enough stitches to make the repeats. I must be doing something wrong. I took the socks off the circular needles and put them on double points. It just seems wiser to learn one new technique at a time. If I figure out the daisy pattern, I will put the socks back on the circulars.

Meanwhile I spotted my next sock yarn at Michaels in Annapolis today — Sophie which is 50% superwash wool and 50% nylon. It was not labeled as sock yarn but I will try it anyway. I bought some white Sophie — some Pink Lemonade and Fruit Punch Kool Aid and tried to color it. The results, a lovely salmon pinkish colored yarn. It is still wet and I am not sure if it will become a tangled mess. I can always hope that I can unravel it, right?

It’s a gray spring day here in Maryland and I just finished embroidering my second sock. Once again, I have socks that are fraternal twins but they are so feminine. The yarn is from Knit Pick and is called Palette -100% Peruvian wool. I just loved the way this felt – dense yet soft. I will keep wearing it over the next few days and I will post about how it wears.

Next up… I am planning to circumvent the second sock syndrome. I will be using two circulars to knit two socks at a time. That will be a new experience for me. I bought this lovely, soft yarn from my local yarn store (LYS). It’s by Plymouth Yarns and is called Happy Feet. The colorway is Strawberry Lime and it makes my mouth water.

I can’t wait to get started. I am debating whether to go for a plain design and let the yarn do its thing or maybe use a few slip stitches to get some vertical ridges. I saw a lovely daisy pattern online and thought of using that. I think I will sleep on it.

Embroidery on socks– so fun and so relaxing

I got started on a second pair of socks. I used Knit picks Palette yarn — colorway blush. The yarn knits up nicely and is only $1.99 a skein. It is 100% Peruvian wool so washing this baby might pose problems for a lazy launderer like me. I will keep you posted.

I also used embroidery floss– this may be a no no. The premise is that the floss may cut the yarn at some point. My second sock is already on my needles and I plan on completing that pretty soon.

I started this sock last week and finished it in 4 days. I used size 0 dpns, cast on 60 stitches divided evenly onto 3 dpns. The ribbing is K2 p2 and I used a lace pattern on one dpn. the lace went awry but I still liked the way these turned out. The yarn is nice and soft. the knitted fabric is also soft and quite dense.
